MOTS-c

A mitochondrial peptide — regulator of cellular energetics, studied as an “exercise mimetic”.

MOTS-c is a peptide encoded directly by mitochondrial DNA (an MDP). It acts as a signalling molecule between the mitochondrion and the cell nucleus and participates in regulating energy metabolism.

It sits at the centre of research into metabolic flexibility and insulin sensitivity. It is described as an exercise mimetic because it activates some of the pathways otherwise triggered by physical exertion.
